EFFECTIVE AND ECONOMIC EXCAVATION BY ROADHEADERS

The article describes a project, carried out at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, designed to quantify the cutting ability of roadheader tunnelling machines for a range of rock types. Results show how a standard laboratory cutting test can be applied to the roadheader's cutting system in order to increase cutting rates and also to reduce cutting tool and component replacement costs. /TRRL/
