CAUSES OF THE CORROSION OF CONCRETE REINFORCEMENT

CAUSAS QUE EN LA PRACTICA PRODUCEN LA CORROSION DE LAS ARMADURAS

Brief details are given of the electrochemical mechanism which triggers off the corrosion process and increases the frequency of the phenomenon. Corrosion is influenced by concrete characteristics (porosity, mechanical strength, workability, cover of the reinforcement, heterogeneity, cracks), materials characteristics (dirty aggregates, prestressing steel prone to intercrystalline corrosion or tensile corrosion, use of salts as admixtures), and those of the environment (temperature and moisture content). Mention is made of the limit water/cement ratio, workability and type of surfacing to be used, in an aggressive urban environment, or marine or wet environment. The combination of some types of steel or other metals can lead to corrosion, steel and aluminium being the metals generally used in structures. /TRRL/
