THE BROTONNE BRIDGE, DESIGN AND EXPERIENCE GAINED AFTER EIGHTEEN MONTHS OF CONSTRUCTION

IE PONT DE BROTONNE, CONCEPTION, ENSEIGNEMENTS ACQUIS APRES 18 MOIS DE TRAVAUX

This paper reviews some general but basic aspects of this structure especially those concerning the prestressed concrete deck which is suspended from two central stays, the foundations of the main abutments constructed in open cut, and the design of the masts. The difficulties encountered are described and the achievements registered to date in the construction of the structure. Three appendices at the end of the paper are devoted to: (a) a description of the structure; (b) the foundations of the towers; (c) the elastic stability of the towers.
