BEARING CAPACITY BY VARIATIONAL METHOD--DISCUSSION

The paper derives bearing capacity factors of strip footing on homogeneous cohesive-frictional material by the variational method assuming general shear failure along continuous curved slip surface. However, previous limit equilibrium solutions have shown that theoretical slip surface consists of plane and curved segments. Consequently, the analysis considerably overestimates bearing capacity factors especially for cohesionless material. Moreover, previous limit equilbrium solutions are supported by extensive footing tests on clay and sand.
