It is suggested that an approach other than that mentioned in the paper is appropriate to rapid drawdown with undrained pore pressure response in this approach, the stress changes due to drawdown are computed on the assumption that a surface water loss is removed. This approach may lead to a pore critical pore pressure distribution and should be considered in any drawdown design. It is felt that in the case of failure, undrained response plus capillarity effects the suitability of the transient seepage model. Confirmation is asked of the adequacy of the stability analysis used in the paper in comparison with more common approaches.
