ESTIMATING THE NUMBER OF SETS OF CONTAINERS FOR CONTAINER SHIPS

A method of deriving the number of containers required to operate cellular container ships on a scheduled service is given. Results for examples of existing services give good agreement with reported values. The distribution of container turn-round times inland is shown to significantly affect shipping costs.
