CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM: AN AID FOR PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT IN THE SHIPBUILDING INDUSTRY

Ship hull production organisation in the welding and fabrication shops of a mechanised shipyard is complicated by the constantly changing product mix and small batches required. A data collection format has been designed to accumulate the production information of hull components. The format contains infomation on the component's geometrical and other characteristics, its production route through the assembly area, and weld joint lengths at various stages of manufacture. A classification system has been designed to describe the geometrical shape of the hull components. The classification system and the data collection format described can be used for an in-depth analysis of a shipyard's production system. Data generated from the format may be used for simulation and subsequent scheduling of components and assemblies in the yard's fabrication facilities. Order from: BSRA as No. 48,351.
