The problem of a tunnel in a stratified medium is analysed using the finite element method. The behaviour of the liner is evaluated for the excavation loading condition assuming perfect contact between liner and medium. The ratio of the modulii of the strata and the position and orientation the interface between the strata are the variable parameters. Friction elements have been used between the strata when the interface is horizontal. Results indicate that stresses at springing are minimum when interface is about half the radius below the horizontal diameter and the modulii of elasticity of liner and lower stratum are nearly equal. The thrusts, moments and diamatral changes are maximum when interface is inclined at 45 degrees.
