The automotive gas turbine engine was examined for possible introduction during the 1980-1990 time period. Technical analysis was made of the gas turbine engine as alternative to the conventional engine. This alternative was evaluated from a societal point of view on terms of energy consumption, urban air quality, cost to the consumer, materials availability, and industry impact. The results show that the gas turbine engine offers the promise of eliminating the automobile as a significant source of urban air pollution, dramatically reducing fuel consumption, and being saleable. Specifically, the gas turbine engine requires intensive component, systems, and manufacuting process development by the auto industry.
