AEROELASTIC INSTABILITY OF THE TOWER OF A LONG-SPAN SUSPENSION BRIDGE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

The tower of a long-span suspension bridge under construction is known to be susceptible to large vortex-induced vibration. However, the aeroelastic instability of the tower has not yet been made fully clear either, either qualititatively or quantitatively. In this study, the authors have conducted wind-tunnel tests to investigate the aeroelasticity stability of certain types of towers used in suspension bridges. During the tests, they have also succeeded in developing a new aerodynamic damper that provides good vibration control.
