In a discussion of the advantages and problems associated with hot storage systems for bituminous mixtures, the author states that such equipment improves the potential for production planning. It is also an effective means of catering for peaks in demand. When in operation, the hot storage plant stage comes between a coating phase and the transport phase of a blacktop construction process. This allows more efficient operation of a coating plant by reducing the number of mix changes and downtime awaiting transport. It is concluded that to evaluate the advantages of hot storage it is necessary to take an overall view of the blacktop process to realize better plant and transport utilization. There is also potential to improve material quality. /TRRL/
