TRENDS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF HYDROGEN-POWERED VEHICLES WITH HYDRIDE ACCUMULATORS

ENTWICKLUNGSTENDENZEN VON WASSERSTOFF-GETRIEBENEN FAHRZEUGEN MIT HYDRIDSPEICHER

Hydrogen storage in metalhydrides exhibits a number of system specific advantages for practical pollution-free vehicle propulsion which partially compensates for the relatively unfavourable weight ratio of the storage tanks compared to those for liquid hydrocarbons. The hydride tank fulfils the following four functions as well as the appropriate choice of hydride: (1) fuel supply, (2) air conditioning, (3) storage of waste engine heat with (4) water condensation. The hydrogen vehicle with an otto-cycle engine therefore represents an extremely favourable form of transportation for the environment, with a radius of action of 200 to 400 km. Although there does not exist a hydrogen infrastructure comparable to the filling station network for liquid hydrocarbons, the provision of hydrogen e.g. For urban vehicle fleets by means of various sizes of natural gas cracking plants (steam reforming process) could technically be speedily arranged. /TRRL/
