ROADSIDE VERGES AND CONSERVATION IN BRITAIN: A REVIEW

A description is given of work developed in the United Kingdom to estimate the conservation importance of roadside verges. Investigations into management requirements that will satisfy the highway engineers, whilst encouraging wildlife habitats, have been made. The importance of liaison between conservation interests and the highway authorities is stressed. Some aspects of the potential for creative conservation of motorway land are discussed, together with the apparent similarity between motorways and railways. /Author/TRRL/
