A METHOD FOR INCREASING THE LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY OF PLAIN BEARINGS, AND OF STERN-TUBE BEARINGS IN PARTICULAR, CARRYING A TILTED SHAFT

The Author presents calculations, based on hydrodynamic lubrication theory, for the pressure and carrying-capacity of dynamically-loaded plain journal bearings such as stern-tube bearings, and shows inter alia that, by using a tapered bearing-clearance, the carrying capacity of these bearings when supporting a tilted shaft can be increased up to fivefold. The proposed arrangement provides favourable lubrication conditions, and can cope with shaft displacement as well as with the normal shaft rotation. Order from: BSRA as No. 48,214.
