SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE (DIESEL-ELECTRIC) PROPELLER-DRIVE SYSTEM IN THE RESEARCH SHIP POSEIDON

A general description of the research-ship Poseidon, which entered service for the Institut fur Meereskunde, the oceanographic institute at Kiel University, in 1976, was given in the article covered by abstract No. 46,609 (Sept. 1977). The present article gives further information on the ship's Diesel-electric propulsion installation, and discusses some associated matters. The ship's electrical systems were installed by AEG-Telefunken. The principles adopted in the planning of the propulsion installation are listed and discussed, and some comparisons are made with the installation in the Meteor. The electrical side of the Poseidon installation is then described in detail, with special reference to the control and regulation arrangements; circuit diagrams are included. This "power station" installation has, as its prime movers, two MWM Diesels, each driving, at 1,500 rpm, an 810-kVA 660-V alternator which feeds a central a.c. power-mains system, serving, according to requirements, the propulsion installation (the single propeller is driver by a 930-kW 750-V d.c. motor fed through thyristor rectifiers), the bow thruster, and the research and other equipment. There is also a 100-kVA 380-V alternator-set for the ship's mains and the research equipment. A further section of the article briefly describes the simulation study made for the design of the propulsion system and its control, and mentions how some of the calculated results compare with actual measurements in the ship. A final section discusses in some detail the suppression of radio interference in the ship and the electromagnetic compatibility of the system with the ship's scientific equipment, and includes the results of some relevant tests.
