AUTOMATIC REMOTE-CONTROL FROM THE BRIDGE WITH THE AID OF MICROPROCESSORS

The AEG-Telefunden company has, together with Doxford Engines Ltd, developed a bridge control-system for the Doxford 58JS3 low-speed Diesel engine. The system, which employs a micro-processor, is of generally conventional layout, and provides for automatic control from the bridge, manual electrical remote-control from the engine-room control position, the manual mechanical control from the emergency stand at the engine. The Authors (of AEG-Telefunken) describe the system and in particular the functions and operation of the automatic control arrangements. The automatic control and regulation circuits are fully electronic, and all logic and arithmetical operations are carried out by the micro-processor in accordance with a specified program. The article includes block and circuit diagrams of the system, and some general information is given on the advantages of process computers in such applications.
