Steam turbine blades are usually made from heat treatable steels with chromium content of 13 percent. Cracks in blades usually start at the inclusions in steel or at pits, caused by pitting corrosion. Pitting is caused by chloride deposits. Experimental results with steels subjected to NaCl solutions are presented and evaluated. It was concluded that pitting corrosion is caused mainly by the low chromium content.
