Real time communications for ships moving on the high seas can be possible only via satellites. This paper deals with the design and development of a low-cost shipborne helical antenna system for maritime satellite communications in L-Band. The antenna system is simple in design, fabrication and installation and takes care of the maximum pitch and roll motions of a medium size cargo or passenger ship ( + or - 7 degree and + or - 25 degree respectively) without the need for any stabilization platform. The antenna gain is 16.5 dB.
