GRIMSHAW KEEPS UP THE PACE AFTER 25 YEARS OF PEDDLING SUSTAINABILITY

John Grimshaw is the founding member and director of sustainable transport charity Sustrans based in Bristol in the UK. Sustrans has developed several significant initiatives in the UK: the National Cycle Network, Safe Routes to School, Safe Routes to Stations, and Home Zone demonstration projects. Grimshaw's developing interest in practical transport solutions and the promotion of cycling and walking is described. An off-road cycle route was built between Bristol and Bath, much of it by volunteers, to act as a demonstration route. The concept led to more conversions of abandoned railway lines to cycle paths and ultimately to the National Cycle Network. Sustrans' Safe Routes to School programme is now an integral part of every council's local transport plan. The Safe Routes to Stations project aims to create priority links to rail stations for cyclists and walkers. The TravelSmart programme using Individualised Marketing aims to encourage modal shift away from car journeys. The Active Travel programme aims to help hospitals develop travel plans and to promote the health benefits of cycling and walking to work.
