PROOF-OF-PURCHASE SEAL : CLASS IS PLACE SOURCING STAMP OF APPROVAL ON PARTNERING WITH SUPPLIERS, INVOLVING DEPARTMENTAL USERS TO CUT COSTS

While Class Is struggle to wring cuts out of labor and large-scale capital outlays, they are also seeking greater savings through efficiencies in the purchasing practices. One way to is to involve the users of the contracted-out service or product more closely in procurements. People who used the materials in the field would help guide purchasing decisions more directly. Strategic sourcing was applied to ballast contracts in order to identify sources that were most economically located to where the ballast was needed. Other areas of potential gain include vegetation control contracts and supplies, the purchase of vehicles and legal services. Fuel purchases ended up costing $8 million less for one Class I after a sourcing team discovered that daily auctions were the most expensive way to buy fuel long-term. The article also discusses other changes at different railroads. In one instance, a team is attacking the problem of paying 50 different electric bills, which are mostly handled manually by developing a procurement-to-payment strategy.
