SAFETY FIRST : EUROCONTROL IS TAKING ACTION ON ATM SAFETY
The director of Safety, Airspace, Airports and Information for Eurocontrol talks about actions his group is taking to ensure air traffic management safety. Member states are to develop a "safety culture" regarding air traffic management, with all states operating at the same level. A Safety Action Plan will proposed requirements for meeting that goal. In July the organization set up a High Level European Action Group for Air Safety to identify where improvements could be implemented more rapidly. Among the recommendations: improved sharing of incidents and accidents among the different governments; clarifying the rules of the use of Airborne Collision Avoidance Systems; investigating the status of different safety proposals stalled at different levels in the various member states; and developing a list of concrete immediate actions and procedures.
