REPAIR OF BRIDGES UNDER TRAFFIC

ENTRETIEN DES PONTS SOUS TRAFIC

During the 2000-2003 work period, the Committee C11 is dealing with three topics related to strategic Theme 4 "Management and Administration of the road system: asset management; performance management framework (economics); and bridge structure condition. Traffic management during repair works appeared to be an issue ; thus a survey was made and reported in the committee report for the Marrakesh Congress 1991. That report covered the main aspects of the repair of bridges under traffic and that the principal conclusions are still valid. It was decided to update the report. This article is the result of that endeavour. The paper deals with special aspects of repair of bridges when those are made without stopping the traffic. It covers all activities such as surveillance, maintenance, modification and renewal. The considerations are valid for bridges on highways with heavy traffic as well as for bridges crossing such highways.
