CRASH DAMAGE INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES
This paper presents an overview of accident investigation in the UK. Two ongoing studies collect volatile information, essential to understanding an accident, which is only present at the time of the accident. Novel methods such as laser scanning are being developed for data collection; these can allow later analysis of the scene. In-depth accident data allows safety improvements by identifying problems and proposing solutions, and has had an effect on European legislation on front and side impacts, leading to improved test procedures for deformation. Vehicle compatibility is another issue where tests are being improved. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116350.
