BEHAVIOR OF STRUCTURES AND STRUCTURAL DESIGN

In a short introduction the major fields of the offshore assignments of Det norske Veritas are summarized. A description survey is presented of various offshore structures of modern and recent designs. The various aspects of behaviour of steel and concrete structures are concurrently mentioned. The concepts of structural and enduring behaviour of offshore structures are more closely defined and discussed in Section 3. The design principles are outlined and discussed in a separate section. In view of modern design procedures and philosophy of structural safety, two methods are discussed in some detail, namely probabilistic design and the limit state method. The most important aspects as regards methods of structure and load analyses are outlined in Section 5. The methods are divided into two groups, i.e. deterministic analysis and stochastic analysis. Dynamic structural analysis and fatigue analysis are given particular attention. Some major aspects of general risk and reliability analysis are reviewed in Section 6, based on statistical analysis of sorted information from data banks.
