INTERACTION OF PROPELLER NOZZLE WITH STERN FRAME, AND EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF ITS STRESSED CONDITION

A design methodology aimed at extending the service life of a propeller nozzle is discussed. Experimental data on the stress transmission between propeller and stern are given, together with diagrams of the forces acting on the nozzle-stern arrangement, including: (a) the effect of the propeller nozzle on the upper and lower stern-stiffeners, (b) the longitudinal distributin of interaction forces, and (c) during reversal of the rudder-setting. Continuous fillet welding of the nozzle assembly and strengthening of the welded joints of the internal casing are advocated. Order from: BSRA as No. 48,019.
