PROGRESS WITH WATERJET PROPULSION

The "Rocketdyne Powerjet 20" waterjet propulsion unit is a lightweight high-horsepower propulsion system for commercial and military marine applications. The unit, with only a 20-inch-diameter pumping element, and a take-off horsepower of 4,000 (2,100 rpm) with an available NPSH of 24.7 feet, has a flow rate of 24,300 gpm and produces 20,000 lbs. of thrust at zero boat velocity. This represents a significant performance capability. Thirty one units have alrady been supplied to Boeing's Marine System Division in Seattle for use in the Boeing Jetfoil passenger hydrofoil programme.
