DEVELOPMENT OF ROAD TEMPERATURE SENSING SYSTEM USING OPTICAL FIBER

In order to carry out appropriate road management in winter (viz. snow removal, sprinkling of deicing agents and supply of information to road users), technical study is underway on a system, capable of sensing the road surface temperature distribution in a road extension direction, by using the underground temperature measured with optical fiber sensor embedded in the road and the information from meteorological sensor. Field tests were carried out (in National Route No. 18 in Nagano Prefecture) to verify the effectiveness of the system. The results showed that the system estimates accurately the road surface temperature distribution in a road extension direction and that it will help implementation of road control and maintenance in a more efficient manner.
