HOW TO BUILD BETTER HAUL ROADS

The author discusses the planning and the construction of haul roads, emphasizing that surface mine operators who avoid placing subbase materials under the haul-road surface in the interest of economy are often faced with more costly operation. A variety of construction parameters that must be considered if the haul road is going to hold up under traffic planned for it are discussed. These include subbase and surface materials, thicknesses, road-adhesion characteristics, bearing capacity of soils, and hauling widths.
