SHALLOW TUNNEL BENEATH DENSELY RESIDENTIAL AREA IN HANSHIN EXPRESSWAY

Nagata Tunnel, approximately 960m in length, is a twin highway tunnel having two vehicle lanes each of which forms a part of Hanshin Expressway Kobe-Yamate Route. The tunnel, constructed by using NATM, passes beneath a dense residential area. The excavation of Nagata Tunnel must be performed under a combination of adverse conditions including uncemented ground, below groundwater level, urban site, and shallow depth of cover. It was of the greatest concern to stabilize the excavating face and minimize ground displacement, especially surface subsidence, induced by tunnelling. It was, therefore, decided to have a "trial section", from the tunnel portal to the initial 170m excavation of the tunnel, in order to evaluate the effect and applicability of many supplementary tunnel reinforcing and supporting techniques including long forepoling. The performance result in this section is used for more reasonable tunnelling in the forward general section. This paper describes the tunnelling plan in the trial section and the evaluation of supplementary tunnelling techniques by the analysis using monitored data in the section. Moreover, the tunnelling plan in the forward general section is indicated, based on the results in the trial section. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no.
