EVALUATION AND REPAIR OF PAVEMENT ON LONG-SPAN BRIDGES

The Honshu-Shikoku Bridge Authority (HSBA), which is responsible for construction, maintenance and operation, was established in 1970. After implementation of engineering investigations and feasibility studies, three routes for highway/railway were decided between Honshu and Shikoku. In 1988 the Seto Ohashi Bridges firstly connected Honshu with Shikoku as combined bridges for highway and railway, which amounted to the completion of the Kojima-Sakaide Route. In 1998 the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, the world's longest suspension bridge with a main span of 1991 metres, was completed after many technical difficulties had been overcome by employing innovative bridge technologies, which amounted to the completion of the Kobe-Naruto Route. In 1999 other bridges were opened to the traffic, completing the entire linkage of islands on the Onomichi-Imabari Route. The Tatara Bridge is the world's longest cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 890 metres, and the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridges are three consecutive suspension bridges. In order to reduce the dead load, steel deck plates are widely used for long-span bridges of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridges. The two-course structure is selected for pavements on steel deck plates. This structure is composed of a modified asphalt pavement for the surface course and a guss asphalt pavement for the base course. The total thickness of the pavement is 65-75 millimetres. This paper describes the present evaluation of pavements selected on long-span bridges of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridges and also describes a few examples of road repair works carried out as one of the most effective measures for preventive maintenance.
