THE FUTURE STRUCTURE OF THE GERMAN AEROSPACE INDUSTRY

The Federal German Cabinet has linked its decision to come to the financial aid of VFW-Fokker with a demand that VFW-Fokker and MBB shareholders keep discussions open on a merger. It has been the Federal Government's view that state ownership or control is not the best way to re-adapt the structure of the German aerospace industry to the requirements of extremely complex future projects and secure a firm base for a competitive posture. The Government, it is noted, has clearly declared itself in favor of a merger between MBB and VFW-Fokker, with the aim of achieving a competitive aerospace industry organization with a regionally balanced operating structure, so that jobs in the German aerospace industry will be insured for a long period of time. The merger, however, is only one element in the reorganized aerospace industry of the future. The developed and broader European basis in order to attain a durable position on the world market.
