A brief survey was made concerning investigations of various problems in relation to road lighting. Studies of the effects of road lighting on the reduction of nighttime traffic accidents are first reviewed. The visual information which must be perceived by the driver in order to carry on his driving safely is explained. And various investigations concerning the perceptibility of drivers' eyes under the condition of artificial road lighting, carried out in various countries as well as in the authors' laboratory, are briefly described. Finally, as a basis of road lighting engineering, recent developments concerning the investigation on reflection properties of the road surface, together with the theoretical background of the road surface luminance calculation are introduced. Tabulations, illustrations, diagrams, and graphs include English captions.
