EFFECT OF DESIGN PARAMETERS ON POLYMER MODIFED BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

Thin sections - cut and ground asphalt specimens - have been prepared from 39 polymer modified bituminous mixtures to investigate the effect of design parameters on the structure of the polymer modified binder in the bituminous mixture. The thin sections have been examined in a microscope with incident UV-light and observations concerning the structure of the polymer modified binder has been made visually. The bituminous mixtures were mainly produced in the laboratory with different mixing times, mixing temperature or different mixing techniques. In addition, the mineralogy or content of the aggregate and filler were changed. The influence of ageing has finally been investigated by examination of asphalt cores taken from job sites with an age of up to 8 years. When the design parameters are changed, changes in the structure of the polymer modified binder are clearly seen, more for some parameters than for others. The apparent extent of swelling and the distribution of the polymer phase are changed based on the changes of design parameters.
