The demand for an automatic vehicle monitoring system (AVM system) which automatically detects the present position and operating condition of a vehicle station has increased as a result of diversification of social conditions and deterioration of traffic conditions. The present system has been developed for taxis, to make possible an integrated dispatch and control system which automates dispatch functions by automatically detecting and displaying the present position of an available vehicle, and produces a daily report for management. The new system is based on the inverse proximity technique using tone frequency signal and weak radio wave. This technique uses the digital transmission and voice communication channel of FSK-200 BPS, based on the AVM system for a patrol car delivered to the National Police Agency in Japan. The system has been improved in various aspects through actual operation tests and analysis of the test results in order to realize the fair and speedy dispatch of vehicles. As a result, position detection accuracy is ensured within a 0.5 to 1 km area, and dispatch capacity is doubled. "NAPIS" is a trademark of Matsushita Electric Inductrial. Co., Ltd.
