As typical mobile systems, vehicular communications, especially those using ferrite coil antennas and digital transmissions between vehicle and roadside, are considered. Essential factors necessary for the design in general are considered first, and various types of antenna systems are introduced with their characteristics and practical applications. The most useful and significant antenna system is the one which uses ferrite coils, which can be compactly made, flexibly installed, and formed to have high coupling efficiency. Design problems of ferrite antennas employed for vehicular communications, both for vehicles and roadside, are discussed. With newly developed digital demodulation circuitry, high quality code transmission between vehicle and roadside has been realized. For example, the error rate measured by a two-way code transmission system in rather noisy environments in Tokyo metropolitan areas was less than 10 to the minus 6th power with a transmission speed of 4800 bits/sec.
