HYDROGEN AS AN AUTOMOBILE FUEL

Potential use of liquid hydrogen as an automotive fuel is critically examined. To achieve good thermal efficiency, low nitric oxide emissions and to avoid abnormal combustion, the maximum output power of the hydrogen fueled engine should be increased to the greatest possible degree, and the engine operated with lean mixture. The characteristics of hydrogen gas, liquid hydrogen and metal hydride for automobile fuels are described in detail, and the methods of controlling backfiring are discussed.
