RESPONSE OF RUBBLE MOUND BREAKWATERS TO WAVE AND SEISMIC FORCES

A dynamic finite-element analysis is presented for a structure made up of a cement concrete crown element, sand- mastic- grouted rubble, and stone asphalt modelled as an equivalent solid continuum of different materials. The hydrodynamic resistance of the seawater is included and the behavior of the breakwater for the most probable breaking height of wave, obtained from the spectra having a Rayleigh type distribution, is compared with that for a corresponding design wave height. The time histories of displacements and intergranular stresses due to ground motion are also evaluated. The effect of the foundation stiffness is included in the response study for wave loading. Parametric studies are carried out for different facing slopes and wave periods.
