LOS ANGELES HARBOR AND LONG BEACH HARBOR: FINITE ELEMENT NUMERICAL MODEL OF HARBOR RESONANCE

A hybrid finite element numerical model was used to calculate wave-induced harbor oscillations in the Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors complex for incident waves with periods from 1 to 10 min. The model used is a modification of a numerical model developed recently at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology by H.S. Chen and C.C. Mei. Results of the numerical model calculations are compared with prototype data collected in the harbors. The numerical model's use as a design tool and aid to hydraulic model testing is discussed.
