LOS ANGELES HARBOR AND LONG BEACH HARBOR: DESIGN OF THE HYDRAULIC MODEL

This paper describes the design of a hydraulic model and related equipment constructed to experimentally investigate the effects of proposed expansions of Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbors. In order to insure proper reproduction of waves in the model, it was necessary to conduct an extensive study of: wave refraction for wave periods of 15 sec to 6 min; energy transmission through the breakwaters; diffraction through the harbor entrances; reflection from the offshore topography and from harbor boundaries; wave filters and absorbers; model wave-height attenuation; wave generators; and model data acquisition and analyses.
