SS MEDUSA CHALLENGER -- STILL THE FASTEST CEMENT UNLOADER ON THE GREAT LAKES

The Challenger, a converted ore boat, began loading and unloading cement on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in 1967. With an overall length of 552 ft, it is the longest cement distributing boat on the Lakes. It has a 56 ft beam and a carrying capacity of 11,300 short tons. In addition to transporting cement from Medusa Cement's plant in Charlevoix, Mich., the vessel will take on loads from producing plants of other companies.
