INFLUENCES OF PROPELLER AND RUDDER ON MANOEUVRING STABILITY DERIVATIVES

The Author examines a simple procedure for the prediction of stability derivatives of a ship (fitted with propeller and rudder) from those of the bare hull. The importance of such a procedure is that it allows easy investigation of the influence of rudder area on stability derivatives and of scale effect on manoeuvring characteristics. It is found that the lateral force exerted on the hull by the rudder deflection must be taken into account in studies of this kind. Several other conclusions are drawn.
