DYNAMICS AND ITS: BEHAVIOURAL RESPONSES TO INFORMATION AVAILABLE FROM ATIS. IN: IN PERPETUAL MOTION: TRAVEL BEHAVIOR RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AND APPLICATION CHALLENGES

The successful development of an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) depends on the capability of incorporating a vast amount of information about the location of facilities which generate travel, realistic representation of elements of the transportation network on which travel occurs, and a knowledge of driver behaviors under varying stimulus conditions. To achieve the expressed goal of transportation science to increase accessibility for all groups of people, there must be significant contributions to research on transportation system architecture, technology development, policy formation, and operational tests of various systems that represent the components of ITS. This chapter focuses on one key aspect of ITS dynamics-- Advanced Traveler Information Systems, and presents comments on both demand and supply areas of behavioral travel modeling.
