DECK WETNESS AND SHIP EFFICIENCY

Water shipment is the enemy number 1 of full-loaded ships in rough seas. Two diagrams, showing speed related to sea state, in head seas and in beam seas, are given for seven ships, ranging from fast cross-channel ship to the large container-ship, and for each ship information is added, not only on deck wetness, but also on pitching, accelerations, slamming and racing. The actual speed loss is compared with an estimated loss deduced either from a conventional diagram or from a formula, which might well be used at the design stage of the ship. Some guidance on how to prevent wetness is included.
