TEST FILL TO FAILURE ON SOFT CLAY

In the fall of 1972, an instrumented test fill 22 x 70 M was constructed of sand on a very soft deposit of quick clay. If the bearing capacity had been calculated on the basis of standard field vane tests, the fill would have failed at a height of about 3.5 M, however the height of the fill reached 6 M without failure. In order to initiate a failure of the test embankment, a slurry trench was excavated parallel to the fill's length in the fall of 1974. At an excavation depth of 7 M, a well-defined bearing capacity failure occurred under the fill. This made it possible to determine the clay undrained shear strength in situ. Comparisons were made with results of laboratory tests and in-situ measurements with regard to both shear strength and deformation characteristics.(a) /TRRL/
