SOME CONSIDERATIONS ON THE GEOMETRY OF ROAD MARGINS

CONSIDERAZIONI SULLA GEOMETRIA DEI CIGLI STRADALI

The geometrical design of roads is discussed with specific reference to water run-off and vehicle stability in wet conditions. A comparative analysis is presented of the diverse design standards of Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany and the USA, concerning kerb profiles, curve radii and transverse profiles on straight lines and curves, as based on the design speed of the road. The article concludes with a discussion of critical speeds and the problem of aquaplaning in terms of the road geometry. /TRRL/
