The report deals among other things with a method of soil nomenclature from fraction distribution analysis: (1) size fraction boundaries with cyclic repetition. (2) distinction between the concepts of size sort (one property) and soil sort (several properties). (3) introduction of the terms lutum fraction and silt fraction; lutum not identical with "clay"; in "lutum soil" then the lutum fraction dominates. (4) quantitative assessment of the fractions takes place consistently with regard to the largest fraction. These uniform criteria give, in a ternary diagram, polar plane-division lines and a symmetric plane division. The above is analogously extended to cover more than 3 components, including e.g. organic matter. Organic matter is accounted for together with the size fractions in A system which is still symmetric. Finally, designations for drawings and a letter code for photos are given. /TRRL/
