SPEED REGULATION BY IN-CAR ACTIVE ACCELERATOR PEDAL : EFFECTS ON SPEED AND SPEED DISTRIBUTION

This research studies how the use of in-vehicle speed regulating accelerators affected the range of speed and the distribution of speeds in the city of Lund Sweden. 290 cars were tracked with on-board data recorders for 3-11 months. Results suggest that accelerator controls had a significant effect on overall traffic speed on long interrupted stretches, by slowing the fastest vehicles and speeding up the slowest. No effect was recorded in congested portions of roadway. The reduction in mean speeds suggests a large potential safety dividend, with a decrease in police-reported injury accidents of 18- 25% overall according to one model. The study also suggests that the effect of the special pedal lasted for the length of the study. More research is needed on how traffic and driver behavior would be changed if more of the fleet were equipped with the devices.
