GRASSROOT PERSPECTIVES OF PAVEMENT PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE: A STATE-OF-PRACTICE SURVEY IN INDIANA
This paper evaluates the results of a statewide survey on pavement preventive maintenance practice in Indiana. The wide range of practiced treatments were perceived to be beneficial in the short and long term, in terms of increments in condition and service life, respectively. Treatments applied on northern pavements were found to be associated with more stringent application criteria but greater benefits. This result is attributed to relatively unfavorable weather, loading, and subgrade conditions in that part of the state, corresponding to a higher maintenance effectiveness cap compared to the south. Preventive maintenance strategies generally afford pavements approximately a perceived 5-year extension in service life and 14-18% redsuction in subsequent corrective maintenance.
