THE NOISE GENERATED BY SINGLE VEHICLES IN FREELY FLOWING TRAFFIC - SOME FURTHER COMMENTS

The author examines the degree of inhomogeneity in data collected from roadside measurements of vehicle noise by means of an analysis of covariance and uses the results to test three hypotheses. It is concluded that an equation is required to describe how the mean noise level at a site is related to the mean speed when one site is compared with another and a further equation is required to describe how noise levels and speed are distributed about these means at a given site. A suggestion is made for the basis of generating the distribution of noise levels in simulating road traffic noise. /TRRL/
