ALTERNATIVE FUEL TECHNOLOGIES AND GUIDANCE SYSTEMS FOR THE QUAYSIDE TRANSIT SCHEME IN NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

This paper reviews the research conducted on the potential for alternative fuel technologies and guidance systems applicable for the planned Tyne Quayside Transit project. The two specific task for the research were the review of alternative fuel technologies for bus operations and an assessment of recent developments in wire guidance systems since a 1996 demonstration project. The review of alternative fuels is structured as follows: an overview of 'cleaner' fuels, a summary of practical experience, and an assessment of the suitability for the Quayside Transit Route. Details of alternative vehicles are also presented for the two most promising options. The paper reviews the findings of an evaluation of the guidance systems demonstrated in 1996.
